Misc Render (WIP) :: Battle Gnomes Showcase revisited

With the holidays and current workload I've been a little sparse in my updates lately.

On the EverFire side, Battle Gnomes is proceeding well and we're still on track for a first quarter 2013 release.

With a little downtime over the holiday break I put together a few casual renders of a prior scene that I'd utilized for showcasing several assets from BG.

Battle Gnomes exists in a steampunk world of magic and technology.
The assets (gears, motor, lever and pipes) were designed with that in mind, so the original elements have a stylized nature to them.
The game's artistic guidelines require a specific 2D look (as can be seen in the original post, here).

This particular re-texture/re-render updates the assets with a more realistic look and grounds them in a scene which attempts to bring together the somewhat disparate elements.
Two different groups of renders are presented.
The first 3 are from an afternoon setting, the machinery still in the process of being assembled.
The last is from an early evening perspective, after the factory is operational.

Battle Gnomes is a magic-infused steampunk game for the Ouya and mobile platforms under development by EverFire Studios.
With a stylized, lo-fi art style, the game evokes a retro feel while still maintaining the dynamics of modern gameplay.
The system is currently in open alpha with a beta version expected by the end of January, 2013.
Final release will coincide with the launch of the Ouya console by April, 2013.

Battle Gnomes :: Misc Render

I wanted something to showcase sever other miscellaneous assets spread across a few different levels.

The gears, associated hardware, the metal pipes, walkways and support beams all found their way into different scenes.

This represents a setting of my own design that brings them together in a representative manner.

Battle Gnomes :: final renders vs concepts

Two examples of how the final assets compare to the original concept art.

Battle Gnomes :: Steamboat Render

I've been working on building out a model I'd created for Battle Gnomes Adventures a while back, adding specular, normal and self-illumination maps.

I've also been putting together some updates for my portfolio site to feature the workflow for this particular project.

This is just the first couple of steps along the way.

Cyber Solstice :: Scene Renders

I've had a few days off between projects, so naturally... I put together a few more scene renders of Cyber Solstice assets that I'd modeled and textured.

These were produced using Maya's Mental Ray renderer and are not screen captures from the Unity engine.

The water in both of these scenes was created through a custom texture and was not procedurally generated.
Texture-specific reflectivity, specularity, transparency and bump maps were all created for the purposes of getting the most realistic look from the baseline image.

UPDATE :: Cyber Solstice

It's been a little while since I've updated, but a lot of interesting things have been going on behind the scenes at FI Fire.

With funding from VETtransfer, work on a full prototype of Battle Gnomes Adventures will be commencing mid-June.

Up until now, I have been splitting my development time between BGA and Cyber Solstice.
In the short term, I will continue on to assist in the refinement of BGA and move it towards a fully-fledged release.

In the meantime, this is a composite of work that I have completed for the second level of Cyber Solstice, Razor's Edge.

UPDATE : Battle Gnomes Adventures :: Props

This time around, a series of smaller props for the mini boss scene. The battle takes place on a wharf, hence the nautical theme.
The steam boat is part of the same encounter.

UPDATE : Battle Gnomes :: steamboat (textured)

My work week was split between Battle Gnomes and Cyber Solstice, so there was a slight delay in getting this knocked out.
Below is a quick render of the finished textured steam boat for the Clover Grove scene.

UPDATE : Battle Gnomes :: steamboat (WIP)

Another busy month, this time spent focusing on Battle Gnomes Adventures.
Most of the past few weeks have been spent polishing levels, so there isn't much in the way of fresh images to post here.
The one item that I've been tasked with redesigning is the steamboat for the Clover Grove scene.
More work to be done, specifically in terms of additional items for the boat's deck (boilers and other machinery).

This is the work so far:

Update :: GDC / Battle Gnomes Adventures

Prep work is complete and Forever Interactive/FI Fire is gearing up for GDC 2012.

Coding development and implementation is under way over at Cyber Solstice, so I'm shifting over to a new project in the interim, Battle Gnomes Adventures.

BG Adventures is an RPG extension of the base Battle Gnomes experience.

I'll be responsible for terrain development, asset placement and scene polishing in two of the ongoing scenarios.

I'll also prepping some updates for my portfolio site, 25HD.

I should have those up sometime next week.

Cyber Solstice :: Gun Turret

Now that Battle Gnomes has been released, I'm working on a new project over at Forever Interactive.

The working title is Cyber Solstice, a game much in the same spirit as the old Space Harrier arcade title.

Below is a completed asset for the first level.
